May 22, 2014 Jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas), also called Humboldt squid, are most common in the warm waters of Baja California and South America.

They aren’t as long as you would think with a name like that though. They only get to be about 7 feet long and weigh up to 100 pounds. The Humboldt squid, scientifically known as Dosidicus gigas, also known as the jumbo squid, is one of the largest predatory squid species of cephalopods.Native to the eastern Pacific ocean’s warm waters, their population has flourished in recent years, such as far as northern Alaska. The Humboldt squid is a member of the Ommastrephidae family, a species of sea squid notorious for being one of the active predator families in the marine ecosystem. Using a red and white body coloration process during hunting, the Humboldt Squid are also quite adept at retreating from being hunted, as they are able to reach swimming speeds of up to 15 miles per hour!
